If injured in an auto accident, your insurance policy entitles you to a number of benefits. These benefits are:
1. Income Replacement.
2. Caregiver Benefit.
3. Medical And Rehabilitation Benefits.
Here are the amounts applied to the Canadian auto insurance policy in Ontario. Coverages vary from province to province and state to state.
You can use these as a guide to ask your insurance rep about what’s covered and what’s not.
Income Replacement: If you are unable to work, your policy covers 80% of your income up to a maximum $1,000 per week. You can purchase a higher limit if needed. If you are not working, and you are unable to carry on a "normal life", the policy also provides financial assistance.
Caregiver Benefits: If you take care of your children and are unable to do so, the policy provides financial assistance of $250 per week. Higher limits can be purchased.
Medical And Rehabilitation Benefits: The standard maximum amount for items such as physiotherapy, chiropractic treatment, and dental expenses is $100,000, unless your injuries meet the definition of catastrophic, where the limit is $1 million. You can also purchase a higher limit: up to $1 million for non-catastrophic and $2 million for catastrophic injuries. If you need someone to look after you, for non-catastrophic injuries, the cap is $72,000. For a catastrophic loss, it’s $1 million.
